Prologue
I think it was probably the tiny sound of the plastic card hitting the
ground that woke me from my reverie and drew my attention to the fact that
the man in front of me had just disappeared.
When I say 'disappeared', that's exactly what I mean. He hadn't just
wandered off, or walked away. There was no one on my side of the street for
a hundred feet in either direction. He hadn't slipped behind me, either. He
had, quite literally, vanished into thin air. ... ... ...
